4 Effective Ways to Master Method Acting

Method acting is a film acting technique that helps actors create realistic performances. It involves using experiences from their own lives to bring about real emotions their characters can use to authenticate their performances. Method acting is a learned skill, but it can be challenging for even the most skilled actor to master. If you want to make your performances as realistic as possible, you might stand a chance of success by doing some of the following things.

Identify the Emotion

Identifying the emotion you’re trying to portray is one of the most crucial parts of successful method acting. This can be challenging when you’re only reading words from a script, but try to think about how you’d feel in a real-life situation. Anger, sadness, and happiness are among the most commonly shown emotions in theater productions, TV shows, and movies. If you can think about happiness, sadness, and anger in your own life, you might find it easier to know how to portray them while acting.

Evoke Internal Emotional Memories

You’re unlikely to feel sad, scared, or angry about a made-up movie plot, which can sometimes make it challenging to feel those emotions while acting. However, if you were to evoke internal emotional memories and connect them to your current feelings, there can be authenticity in your acting.

If you need to portray sadness in a film, think of a sad emotion from your past. For example, you might shed a tear thinking about your childhood dog dying and using the same energy from that moment to shed a tear for a fake dog dying on screen. The emotion is real, even if the setting is not.

Don’t Force It

Viewers can typically tell when emotion is forced. After all, most of us are capable of feeling happy, sad, and angry, and we know what those emotions look and feel like. If you’re struggling to tap into those feelings, it can be tempting to force them for the sake of having something filmed. However, the results can be less than impressive.

If you know you’re struggling to evoke the right amount of emotion for a particularly emotional scene, use this weakness as your homework. When you get home from a stressful day of filming, work on being true to your emotions and compile a list of memories in your brain that evoke feelings you might use to your advantage.

Understand Method Acting

You might know that method acting involves using your emotional memory to give your character emotions, but it doesn’t hurt to learn more. The more you know about method acting as an acting technique, the easier it might be to harness your emotions and truly lean into your character.

Method acting involves understanding your character’s objectives and obstacles, learning their intentions, and understanding their actions to achieve their goals. Essentially, method acting consists of learning everything about your character to be more in tune with them as a real person and master the deep acting side of method acting.

Many famous actors have mastered method acting, and it shows in their authentic, standout performances. However, that doesn’t mean you, as a beginner actor, also can’t become an exceptional method actor. Try out these techniques above, and it might only be a matter of time before you’re crying on cue.
