A Swing and a Hit: Debut Films at This Year’s Raindance

Debut Films

sale

Some people just get it right on their first tries. Jordan Peele with Get Out, Ari Aster with Hereditary, Celine Song with Past Lives, — many directors and filmmakers nail it right away (or at least with their official directorial debuts), cementing their legacies and future viewers right off that bat.

When a director’s debut hits the mark, I’m always looking forward to their future movies. That’s why I have such high expectations for sophomore films: Us, Midsommar, and Celine Song’s soon-to-release Materialists. And I haven’t been disappointed yet.

Directorial debuts are extra exciting since they have so much potential. It’s a new story, a new style, a new voice. Read this list of directorial debuts on this year’s Raindance program so that you can be the first to discover the next big director as soon as their debut releases.
