When the COVID-19 lockdown is announced, the entire cast and crew of a feature film are sent home – alone. With seven interlinked narratives, A Bird Flew In examines what happens when we are freed from external distractions and forced to find a meaning in our loves and lives.
Review:
Kirsty Bell’s directorial debut A Bird Flew In is a poignant drama about the need for human intimacy and validation during self-isolation. After a film production is shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its cast and crew are sent home. What ensues is a series of intertwined stories: Peter, an actor-poet, falls madly in love with Anna, a French co-star. Diane, the director, and Lucy, the editor, are editing the film during lockdown; their budding interest in each other is cut short when Lucy’s mother contracts the virus. Rebecca, a talented actress, descends into alcoholism after the loneliness becomes unbearable. Naomi attempts to persuade her philandering husband to travel from Australia. Miles, a camera assistant, spies on his ex via security cameras. Ari, who is pregnant, decides to focus on her acting career instead of motherhood.
A Bird Flew In could not be more relevant to our times. Featuring moving performances from a talented cast, including Jeff Fahey, the film balances pathos, humour, and existential dread with a poetic sensibility. With dynamic editing, a humanistic approach to storytelling, and deft narrative pacing, the film underscores the need for human connection and our desire to find life meaningful during lockdown. The film makes its UK premiere at Raindance.
