Nominated for Best International Feature
In order to avoid being canceled, the House of Womxn association changes up their proposed panel to satisfy a diversity checklist. The resulting summit of personalities, brought together to prepare for the international women’s conference, threatens to destroy its public image entirely.
For feminist group House Of Womxn, removal from the International Women’s Conference due to their lack of diversity would be no laughing matter. To stave off disaster, the all-white board hires lesbian Paula, who assembles a team of marginalised people to create a new manifesto. Over a weekend of cohabitation, these LGBTQIAvengers show why true inclusivity is not just about who can take part, but also the conversation itself.
Winner of the screenwriting award at FilmFest Munchen, Merle Grimme makes her feature film debut with a fresh, feisty depiction of the well-intentioned confusion around representation in modern life. From cancel culture, to white saviours, to labour exploitation, no subject is safe from Grimme’s spotlight. Equally, no character or topic is handled without empathy.
Those fighting for a fairer world are regularly accused of being humourless; Clashing Differences adeptly demonstrates that our differences don’t just make us human; they can also make us smile. Gatekeepers may wince as they are skewered by Grimme’s modern wit; but it is they who need to see the film the most. This, though, is for anyone who believes in inclusivity and representation; and also likes to laugh.
