Q&A with Katherine Propper
Content Warnings – Adult Language/Drug Use
Propper’s debut feature is a story about grappling with shame and overcoming hardships in pursuit of one’s dreams and inspired by true aspects of Sauve’s life, a young rapper who leaves everything behind and embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery, music and friendship in the heart of Texas.
Sol is an aspiring young rapper and musician who funds his studio sessions by selling drugs with life-long friend Wesley. Though he’s treated like a member of the family by Wesley’s mother and little sister Jessie, Sol decides to take a chance with a group of touring hip-hop musicians about to embark on a road trip across Texas. Leaving all he knows behind, Sol embarks on a musical odyssey across the state, getting to know his new companions and assessing his true aims in life.
The debut feature of Katherine Propper, Lost Soulz comes hot off the heels of a rapturous reception at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Mixing a detached, observational camera with mobile phone footage, neon lit performances and miniature music videos, Propper sensitively takes us through a moment of crisis for Sol as a musician and friend.
Based in part on the real-life experiences of Suave Sidle (Sol), Lost Soulz showcases some serious musical talent across its many performances. For its subject matter, it remains generously empathetic and non-judgemental throughout, with an improvisational feel that brings a rare honestly to the American road movie genre.
This is a captivating, beautifully shot account of contemporary hip-hop and young friendships in the American south.
