Writer director Adam Ethan Crow brings to the screen a taut and moody thriller inspired by the true life story of Jacintha Saldanha, a London-based nurse who, in 2013, was duped by two radio DJs into putting their call through to the Duchess of Cambridge while she was in hospital. Jacintha was bullied by the media for her actions and took her own life just three days later.
Jump forward to 2023, and stories like Jacintha’s are playing all across social media – and Crow’s movie Warhol shines a light on what is becoming an all-too-familiar part of our culture.
The plot effortlessly cross-cuts between three gripping storylines: a shock-jock seeking to up his show’s ratings, a deaf girl struggling to win her girlfriend back and a homeless veteran trying to convince a young gang member not to kill a rival.
Warhol features atmospheric cinematography by Stuart White who created the look and feel of a movie that appears to have been shot way above its budget. Imaginative casting by Jeremy Zimmerman puts American actor/producer Corey Johnson in the central role, in a sure and confident performance that should gain positive critical notice.
Andy Warhol memorably said, “In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.” This film explores Warhol’s future, our present. Those fifteen minutes have shrunk to fifteen seconds and the scramble for fame has become deadly.
