Do you dream of becoming a filmmaker? You’re not alone; it’s a dynamic, growing field. The global film market is expanding rapidly as the world is becoming more connected. To stand out in this competitive market, you’ll need to have high-level skills that are unique and compelling. While it’s a challenging line of work, the rewards of filmmaking are great. Here are several tips for making your filmmaking dream a reality.
1. Get Quality Education
If you get a degree in film, you’ll have a well-recognized professional qualification that you can leverage within the industry. Find a good reference source on arts degree programs that have strong film departments. And find out as much as you can about them. Are they a good match for your background and interests? Do they have faculty you want to learn from? What about the cost? Do a search on student loans to help you decide what might be financially within your reach. While you’re there, make the most of your school experience; it’s a valuable opportunity to devote yourself to learning from high-level professionals.
2. Seek Out Guidance
As soon as you can, look for an internship where you can sharpen your skills. It’s the ideal thing to do when you’re young to help kickstart your career in filmmaking. Often, interns meet future collaborators during their internships and learn some of the “softer” skills such as productivity, networking, and event coordination. Filmmaking is one of those fields that is best learned through the process of apprenticeship. Internships give you a type of apprentice situation that’s invaluable.
3. Set Goals for Excellence
Perfection is not a requirement for being a filmmaker. In fact, some of the qualities that make you imperfect also make you memorable. Keep in mind, though, that excellence is crucial. Take the time to define for yourself what excellence means. Write it down. Create goals and objectives that align with your definition of excellence. Then, get out into the field. Practice the skills you’ve learned, observe your level of success, and objectively review all outcomes. Did you meet your own expectations? If not, retool and go back out and give it another go. It can be helpful to set a goal for each skill to help you keep track of your progress. his is a smart tack to realize your filmmaking dream.
4. Get Smart About Marketing
One of the most critical skills that many filmmakers lack is marketing. It’s crucial for you to create a marketing strategy that is aligned with your filmmaking style and reaches your ideal fan base. When you’re getting started, this can be daunting. Keep it simple, but cover the bases. First, research filmmakers you admire to get ideas. Set up a simple website, and showcase your best work. Find out the platform where your audience spends the most time on social media and set up a presence there. Update it regularly, follow best practices for engagement, and build organic reach.
5. Watch and Listen
Obviously, it’s necessary to have a unique, unrepeatable style. That said, watching (and listening!) to the work of others allows you to “pull focus” and broaden your perspective. If possible, watching the behind-scenes features on others’ films can give you useful information about blocking, staging, and other techniques. Also, look for tutorial videos that can help you refine your skills.
6. Practice Continuously
There are no shortcuts: The only way to improve as a filmmaker is to film. Doing so gives you a way to keep an eye on your progress and improve weak areas. It doesn’t have to be complicated if you don’t have an important project planned. Everywhere around you, there’s a story to be told. The vast majority of your short work will never reach the public, but it’s important material for you. Also, experiment with various lenses; they’re a sort of “palette” that helps you express yourself uniquely.
Becoming a filmmaker requires creativity and tenacity. Keep these tips in mind as you plan for success!
